Mala Strana (Lesser Quarter)

The neighborhood in which we stayed is one of the original five districts of old Prague. It's called Mala Strana, variously translated as Little Town or Lesser Quarter. Most of the buildings are late Renaissance and Baroque buildings dating from a big fire in 1541.

This view is up our street, Trziste, past the American Embassy. The orange building on the right housed a great vegetable/fruit store, bakery, and some terrific bars, including J.J. Murphy's Irish Pub and the Saint Nicholas Cafe.

Each day, we would walk down Triziste Street and turn the corner toward Malostranske Namesti (Mala Strana Square). The center of the square is the St. Nicholas Church, billed as the most beautiful church in Prague. Its elegant dome and towering spire are visible throughout the city.

The square itself was a wonderful blend of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, with great sweeping arches and colorful walls framing large windows.

Just off Mala Strana are numerous lovely churches (such as the church of the Prague bambino), plus the beautiful neighborhood of Kampa Island, with lovely houses, quiet bars, and water wheel.
