Facebook 101:
An Introduction to Using Facebook
Presented by Jean Pickering, President & Social Media Director, The Tektite Group, LLC

In 2004, 2 guys launched Facebook from their dorm room at Harvard University. It quickly grew to be “the chosen” social media tool used by college students to network with each other. As those students graduated, they took Facebook with them and all of a sudden, everyone realized the value of Facebook and started using it to share information and communicate with their friends and associates. If Facebook were a country, it would be the 4th largest country in the world. It has been adopted by individuals of all ages, large and small companies and non-profits.

Just some facts:

• There are more than 60 M update to Facebook every day
• More than 3.5 M events are created each month
• 1.5M local businesses have Pages on Facebook

Many businesses and organizations are now creating Facebook Fan Pages to communicate with their customers/members. However, before someone can create a Facebook Fan Page, they need to have a personal profile page on Facebook. This basic workshop is intended to help you create, maintain, and control the security for your personal profile page on Facebook. After a brief introduction, this workshop will be a hands-on workshop. At the end of the class you will have:

• An understanding of what Facebook is and how you can use it
• A basic understanding of the difference between personal profiles, Groups, and Fan Pages
• An understanding of the new User Interface for Facebook
• A Facebook Profile with a vanity URL
• Set up the security settings for your profile page
• Customized the tabs which comprise your personal profile page
• Friends (people in the class will be encouraged to “Friend” each other
• Lists (groups of people which will allow you to customize your security settings)

Target Audience:

Anyone who knows how to use a computer, understands the basics of “surfing” the web and wants to create or have more control of their personal Facebook profile. To really make this workshop effective, you might want to bring the following things with you:

• A digital picture of yourself which you can upload for your avatar
• Your resume
• Digital pictures you would like to upload
• A list of events that you are sponsoring or attending and want to share with others
• Videos you would like to upload
• Any links/websites you would like to share with others

Although, bringing any of these things is optional, the workshop will be more effective for you if you bring with you some or all of them.
