Lovely “Made in Japan”
Trinket or Cigarette Box

with Classical Motif

A very pretty, old lidded trinket or cigarette box, with the only maker's mark indicating "Made in Japan." The sides look like folds of draped cloth, and the lid features a scene of two cupids (or angels) bearing shields on a field of flowers (reminescent of scenes from mythology, welcoming heros to the afterlife). To me, the best feature is the color: a very lovely, soft teal or greenish-blue with darker blue highlights that create a very soft sheen, like satin.

This piece shows its age, with various nips and bites. The most visible is a tiny chip out of one corner (see top photo at right). There are also light hairline cracks in several spots, plus the inner box rim has a chip on the underside (not particularly visible, but you can feel it). There is also light crazing visible with a magnifying glass.

This piece is marked on the base with a stamped 'MADE IN JAPAN," with no other attribution. I wish I had a better idea of its age; from its design and wear marks, I would guess probably the 1940s or 1950s (vintage!). Price: $10.

Cute Little Donkey Toothpick Holder
Probably Made in Japan

A very cute toothpick holder shaped like a miniature donkey pulling a barrel cart, finished is a fine blue glaze. This sweet vintage pieces measures 3 inches in length, 1.25 inches wide across the base, and 2.5 inches high at the ear.

This little guy wears his age well, with no chips, cracks, crazing, hairlines, or flakes. Any small bumps or pits are under the galze and original to manufacture.

The piece is unmarked. But the bottom is an unglazed white clay. At first I thought it might be by one of the novelty pottery makers such as Morton Pottery, but my best guess is "Made in Japan" (there was probably a paper sticker that has been removed). Price: $5.00.
