Burnished
Mexican Pottery Folk Art Bird
Unmarked, Possibly Tonala, Wonderful Design
This
very expressive primitive bird figurine is a great piece of Mexican
folk art. I found it in the company of another bird that WAS marked
Tonala, and I've seen this shape on eBay attributed to Tonala, but
I have no evidence for that connection.
This
very decorative, vintage piece measures 5.5 inches long and 3.25 inches
high at the head. It is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks,
hairlines, or flakes. The only flaw I can find is a bit of sticky residue
on the front from the sales tag where I bought it (I didn't want to
try to clean it too hard, in fear of damaging the burnished glaze).
This
piece has a really neat feel to it. The unusual decoration on the back
is a butterfly (monarch?) landing on orange flowers (top photo at right).
The semi-exposed bottom (with firing hole) is unmarked. (Any white
spots in the photos are camera flash.)
