Black Hills Clay
Hand-Painted Pine Cone Design

South Dakota

Colorful vintage Black Hills Clay pot or planter with a hand-painted pinecone design. This small piece was probably a souvenir from South Dakota. It measures about 4.45 inches wide at the rim, 3 inches wide across the foot, and 2.75 inches high at the sides. The pot is glazed in a very colorful light brownish-orange, with a border of brown around the top and bottom.

The piece has heavy overall crazing (including a couple of heavy craze lines that look like cracks but aren't, as visible in the photos at right), and a lot of dirt and mineral residue on the interior and rim (from use). There are no structural flaws or damage that I can find.

The bottom is signed "Hand Painted / Evelyn Van / Made of Black Hills Clay." Price: $9.00.
