Haeger Pottery (with emphasis on the great Royal Hickman)

Amazing Shape, Great Glaze:
Royal Haeger
Centerpiece Bowl on Metal Stand

A wonderful large console or centerpiece bowl in white and dark green, marked Royal Haeger.

This nifty bowl measures 17 inches long, almost 7 inches wide across the center, and 5.25 inches high at the curve of the handles.

It is in good condition. There are very fine (tight) stress lines (not quite hairlines, in terms of depth) in the center of the bowl (photo below). Otherwise, the piece is in very good condition, with no chips or crazing that I can see.

The metal base needs a good cleaning, but is free of indents or scratches. Any white spots in the photos are from camera flash.

On the underside of each handle are the marks. One handle has an incised (under glaze) mark for "ROYAL HAEGER." The other has a number I can't decipher (looks something like 65518).

Donkey and Cart Planter
#R754, Blue, Circa 1943

A very pretty large figural planter from Haeger, shaped like a donkey pulling a cart. It is glazed in a rich trophy or loving cup, glazed in a rich satiny blue-green glaze.

This planter measures 11.25 inches long from cart to ear, 4.25 inches wide across the cart, 5.5 inches high at the ear.

This vintage piece has had a hard life, and it shows in minor flakes and fleabites, as highlighted in the photos at right. The worst are on the back of one ear, around the front foot, and on the back edge of the cart. None of these chips and flakes are horrible, but there are several. That explains why someone once painted this piece white. I've been able to remove almost all of the paint with patient soaking in plain water, but you can still see a couple of white spots in the finer detailed areas; they should clean up fairly simply. There are no cracks or hairlines.

The base is not marked, but has the usual Haeger stilt or firing marks. This exact piece is shown on page 270 of the Dilley encyclopedia, "Haeger Potteries through the years," where it is listed as #R754 Donkey and Cart Planter, blue in color, circa 1943, no markings.
